Haldimand Norfolk Housing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Making Way for New Housing

Delhi, Ontario, September 23, 2024 – The Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation (HNHC) is proud to announce a significant step towards addressing the community’s housing needs starting with the demolition of two legacy social housing homes on Gibralter Street in Delhi. These homes, part of HNHC’s portfolio, would require extensive renovations to meet modern housing standards, and their demolition is paving the way for an innovative, transformative housing development project.

The new multi-residential building, set to feature a minimum of 16 units, is designed to support residents with varying income levels. Aligned with HNHC’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainability, the building will offer a mix of Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI), Affordable, and Market rent levels, ensuring a diverse range of affordable housing options for the community. “We are excited to embark on this project that will revitalize the housing landscape in Delhi and contribute to the creation of inclusive, safe, and sustainable communities. This project is about more than just replacing outdated infrastructure; it is about building a stronger future for all residents of Delhi and Norfolk County,” said Matt Bowen, CEO of HNHC.

This project is part of HNHC’s broader regeneration and asset management strategies to revitalize aging housing stock and meet the growing demand for affordable housing.

“As Mayor, improving housing supply and affordability is a top priority of mine; this regeneration strategy will allow us to expand from 2 to 16 units at this location, providing more affordable options for our community. It’s also a crucial step toward addressing the housing challenges we face and ensuring Norfolk remains a place where everyone can find a home,” said Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin

Sarah Page, General Manager of Health and Social Services, expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing partnership between HNHC and Norfolk County: “We are excited to watch the beginning stages of regeneration and revitalization in housing across Norfolk County. This has taken strong partnerships with HNHC, municipal support, and all teams coming together to make change happen. This new development in Delhi will display the innovative and inclusive path forward to supporting housing across all income spectrums.”

HNHC is dedicated to ensuring that Delhi residents have access to safe, affordable, and quality housing, and the upcoming project is a testament to their ongoing commitment to fostering a community where everyone has a place to call home. The Demolition is scheduled to take place on September 24, 2024.

Attn: Residents – New HNHC Office Hours

HNHC is experiencing a very busy summer!

With the numerous capital projects and repairs currently underway throughout our portfolio, many of our staff are required to be on-site to oversee and assist our contractors.  With summer holidays, this sometimes leaves our office understaffed.

To manage this, we are adjusting our office hours.  Effective July 18, 2024, our office will be closed for lunch daily from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Friday will continue to be by appointment only.

Welcome Home! Partners Celebrate Opening of New Supportive Housing with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Partners celebrate the opening of Addictive Supportive Housing (ASH) opening led by Mayor Amy Martin, Councillor Alan Duthie, Sarah Page from Health, Social Services and Housing, as well as representatives from Norfolk General Hospital’s Holmes House, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation.

“We’re proud to open up to 8 supportive housing units for folks in post-addiction recovery,” said Matt Bowen, HNHC CEO.

HNHC staff were proud to host an official ribbon cutting, a symbolic gesture of our commitment to the community. The accompanying barbecue, enjoyed by past and future program participants, was a heartwarming occasion that underscored the importance of our collective efforts in overcoming challenges. Hearing their stories and spending time together emphasized the importance of working together to solve challenges.

“We are looking forward to more innovative community partnerships that will support Norfolk County in the pursuit of more affordable housing while working collaboratively with citizens and staff,” added Matt Bowen.

Collaborators Problem-Solve to Bridge a Critical Gap

When the Norfolk General Hospital Team overseeing the Addictive Supportive Housing Program was confronted with the imminent loss of several private apartments crucial to the success of their program participants, they realized the urgency of the situation and the necessity of community collaboration to find a solution.

Pictured are representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association, Norfolk General Hospital, Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation, Health & Social Services, and past ASH program participants united in a shared mission to address the issue. Matt Bowen, CEO of HNHC, acknowledged the participants’ significant contributions, stating, “Their insights on the importance of community integration in recovery were invaluable.”

As a result of this successful collaboration, two homes owned by HNHC will be deeply retrofitted to accommodate up to 8 program participants. “Renovations are well underway and will be ready for move-in later this summer,” added Matt Bowen, “resulting in an innovative response to a community need.”

Partners celebrate a successful collaboration, marking a positive outcome for Student Housing in Simcoe.

HNHC has received approval to convert two semi-detached homes in Simcoe into affordable housing for Fanshawe College students. This collaborative effort,” said Matt Bowen, CEO of Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation, “underscores our commitment to diversifying housing options. It also provides a tangible benefit, offering 6-8 Fanshawe students with affordable housing within walking distance of campus, a crucial step in their educational journey.”

“We’re so excited to partner with HNHC on this exciting new initiative that will allow more students to live in our community while they study here,” added Donna Gates, Associate Dean of Fanshawe, Simcoe Campus, “We appreciate the support to students that this opportunity will offer and continue to work on creative strategies for helping to resolve affordable housing issues.”
