Partners celebrate the opening of Addictive Supportive Housing (ASH) opening led by Mayor Amy Martin, Councillor Alan Duthie, Sarah Page from Health, Social Services and Housing, as well as representatives from Norfolk General Hospital’s Holmes House, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation.

“We’re proud to open up to 8 supportive housing units for folks in post-addiction recovery,” said Matt Bowen, HNHC CEO.

HNHC staff were proud to host an official ribbon cutting, a symbolic gesture of our commitment to the community. The accompanying barbecue, enjoyed by past and future program participants, was a heartwarming occasion that underscored the importance of our collective efforts in overcoming challenges. Hearing their stories and spending time together emphasized the importance of working together to solve challenges.

“We are looking forward to more innovative community partnerships that will support Norfolk County in the pursuit of more affordable housing while working collaboratively with citizens and staff,” added Matt Bowen.

When the Norfolk General Hospital Team overseeing the Addictive Supportive Housing Program was confronted with the imminent loss of several private apartments crucial to the success of their program participants, they realized the urgency of the situation and the necessity of community collaboration to find a solution.

Pictured are representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association, Norfolk General Hospital, Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation, Health & Social Services, and past ASH program participants united in a shared mission to address the issue. Matt Bowen, CEO of HNHC, acknowledged the participants’ significant contributions, stating, “Their insights on the importance of community integration in recovery were invaluable.”

As a result of this successful collaboration, two homes owned by HNHC will be deeply retrofitted to accommodate up to 8 program participants. “Renovations are well underway and will be ready for move-in later this summer,” added Matt Bowen, “resulting in an innovative response to a community need.”

HNHC has received approval to convert two semi-detached homes in Simcoe into affordable housing for Fanshawe College students. This collaborative effort,” said Matt Bowen, CEO of Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation, “underscores our commitment to diversifying housing options. It also provides a tangible benefit, offering 6-8 Fanshawe students with affordable housing within walking distance of campus, a crucial step in their educational journey.”

“We’re so excited to partner with HNHC on this exciting new initiative that will allow more students to live in our community while they study here,” added Donna Gates, Associate Dean of Fanshawe, Simcoe Campus, “We appreciate the support to students that this opportunity will offer and continue to work on creative strategies for helping to resolve affordable housing issues.”

The Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation will join communities across Canada to recognize and observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Saturday, September 30, 2023. As an approved statutory holiday, our office will be closed on Monday, October 2, 2023.

The statutory holiday was created to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis survivors, their families and communities, and to provide an important opportunity for Canadians to remember the victims of the Indian Residential School System and to reflect on the painful lasting impacts on Residential School survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities.

HNHC is a municipally-owned Local Housing Corporation that owns and manages 544 rent-geared-to-income and market rent homes throughout both counties. HNHC is the largest Community Housing Provider and offers specialized property management services to other housing providers and non-profit organizations.

Our board regularly meets monthly in Simcoe (excluding July, August, and December) and will hold additional special meetings when the need arises.

Board members are required to have internet access, email, and the ability to participate in Teams web conference calls during times when in-person meetings cannot be held.
